Journalist - Detroit News (1963 – 2004)
Jerry Green served as a U. S. Naval Officer for three years before beginning his career as a sportswriter for the Associated Press in 1956. In 1963 he moved on to the Detroit News, where he stayed for the next 41 years, retiring in 2004. Green has covered all four Detroit professional sports teams during his career and has been named the Michigan Sportswriter of the year 10 times. As of 2022, he is the only sportswriter to have covered the first 56 Super Bowls. He has published eight books and was awarded a Lifetime Member Award by the Detroit Sports Media for his long and distinguished career. Jerry Green was the recipient of the 2005 Dick McCann Memorial Award and is a member of the writer’s wing of the Pro Football Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2003. Jerry Green passed away on March 24, 2023 at 94 years of age.
