Frank Beckmann was born in Germany and moved to the Detroit area at an early age, attending Warren Cousino High School. Beckmann started his broadcasting career in 1969 and was named the radio play-by-play announcer for the University of Michigan in 1981, a position he held until his retirement in 2013. During this time, he also broadcast Detroit Lions games from 1979 – 1988, Detroit Tigers games from 1995 – 2003 and served as WJR’s Sports Director for several years. Over the years, he has been honored with several “Top Michigan Sportscaster” awards from both the Associated Press and United Press International. Beckmann won the 2010 Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association Ty Tyson Award for Excellence in Sports Broadcasting. He hosted one of the first all-sports talk shows on WJR in the early 1980’s. Frank Beckmann was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Frank Beckmann passed away on February 12, 2022 at 72 years of age.
