Emanuel Steward was born in Bottom Creek, West Virginia moving with his family to Detroit at age 12. Steward started boxing at the Brewster Recreation Center, (the same gym as Joe Louis) and compiled a 94 - 3 record as an amateur boxer winning the 1963 national Golden Glove championship in the bantamweight division. Steward started training amateur boxers and was so successful that he moved to the professional ranks and became one of the top trainers in the country. Steward trained 41 world champion fighters throughout his career with the most famous being Thomas Hearns. Emanuel Steward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, the World Boxing Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1996. He passed away on October 25, 2012 at 68 years of age.
