David Holmes was born in Carlton, Kansas and was a collegiate football, basketball and track great at Oklahoma A & M, (now Oklahoma State). He obtained his master’s degree from Columbia in 1908 and would go on to become the Athletic Director (AD) at Detroit Junior College, (now Wayne State) in 1917. He would remmain as AD for the next 41 years retiring in 1958. In addition to his role as AD, he would also coach football from 1918 – 1928 where he compiled a record of 35 – 35 – 9, basketball from 1917 – 1929 where his record was 129 – 66, track where his record was 50 – 47 outdoors and 38 – 38 indoors as well as cross country where he went 99 – 53 over 26 seasons. He made an indelible mark on Wayne State athletics with his leadership and tireless dedication. David Holmes was inducted into the Wayne State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1976 and was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1975. He passed away on June 19, 1960 at 71 years of age.
