Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) (1931 – 1968)

Charles Forsythe was born in York, Michigan. He graduated from Michigan Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) in 1920 earning his Master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1926. He went on to teach at Milan High School before moving to Lansing where he became Athletic Director and teacher at Lansing Central High School. In 1929 he joined the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) as assistant director of athletics and took on the directorship in 1931, a role he held until his retirement on July 31, 1968. When he took on this role in 1931, the MHSAA was a loosely organized grouping of schools. When he retired it contained more than 750 high schools, 500 junior high schools and over 75,000 participants. Forsythe was named to the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame for his contributions to high school athletics. Charles Forsythe was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1970. He passed away on Dec 19, 1968 at 69 years of age.
